The Diocese of Austin, the Catholic Church of Central Texas, is committed to preventing harm from happening to any of our children or vulnerable adults. If you are aware of sexual abuse and/or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult by a volunteer, employee or clergy member, our Ethics and Integrity in Ministry policies require that you report that information to the diocesan chancellor by calling (512) 476-4888. A Notice of Concern form can also be
used and is available on our diocesan Web site, www.austindiocese.org (click on the link
“To report abuse”). These reports may be made anonymously.
It is also state law that abuse and/or neglect of a minor must be reported to local law enforcement or the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400 or www.dfps.state.tx.us.
In addition, if at any time you see something that appears suspicious, makes you uncomfortable, or violates policy, please bring it to the attention of the Faith Formation
Office, Fr. Pat, or directly to Bishop Aymond's office at 512-476-4888. Our
diocesan policies, Ethics and Integrity in Ministry, are rooted in the Catholic understanding that each individual must be respected and honored. Jesus had a deep, abiding respect
for each human being and would not harm or mislead anyone in his or her personal or
spiritual life. We, the church, must attempt to do likewise. Our policies cover four areas of possible harm: immoral conduct, exploitation, harassment and abuse.
Anyone, volunteers, paid staff, religious or clergy, involved in a ministry with minors (those under the age of 18) or vulnerable adults (those who are uniquely vulnerable to abuse because of physical or mental disabilities) is required to:
- Submit a Parish Volunteer Application to the Diocese of Austin
- Agree to a criminal background check
- Attend a workshop on "Protecting God's Children," a seminar on child sexual abuse.
-
Complete an online application with the Diocese of Austin. See link at top of page. The online application takes 30-60 minutes to complete.
- Attend a "Protecting God's Children" workshop within 90 days of starting your ministry. "Protecting God's Children" workshops last 3 hours and are held throughout the diocese. You can view a list of upcoming workshops at link above.
